martin was raised by his mother after martin's father abandoned his family when martin was a child. at 17, martin had to drop out of school to take care of his chronically ill mother, who he eventually moved to a care home in devon.
he lied on his cv to get a job at the magnus institute, where he originally worked in the library until he was moved to the archives as an archival assistant to jonathan sims.

an avatar despite being very close to becoming a Lonely avatar.

martin is one of those characters i see myself in so much that
sometimes, it's hard to like him at all!
i love him for how layered and realistic he is, while he seems
like a pretty stereotypical character from the outside. i think
he's fully aware of and plays into being the sweet, bumbling and
awkard guy he's perceived to be.
in my interpretation, he is much more aware of himself than he
seems to be, and deliberately makes himself seem more 'lovable'
than he feels he is.
i also love his obvious caretaker complex and insanely low
self-esteem (more on that in the ships section lol).
his character development, to me, seems a lot like him 'unmasking'
and letting his less innocent aspects show (like how absolutely
ready he is to murder some avatars).
how cathartic does it have to be, as someone who spent his entire
life submitting and taking care of everyone around it in the hopes
of being useful and kept around, to finally let out his toxicity?
but ofc he isn't just his bad aspects. i think he's also a very
self-reflected, kind and caring person, genuinely. i feel like
there is so much more going on in his head than we ever realize.

i absolutely ADORE jmart and i'm soo happy it's canon.
i love the variety this ship brings with it: these two can be
the fluffiest little guys on earth and have a wholesome
relationship, and it suits them perfectly. they can also work as
being an incredibly toxic couple witht he worst communication
known to man who deeply resent each other but still love each
other as well.
and, they can be the codependent couple of my dreams where both
are annoyingly self-sacrificing and self-destructive♥
pmart (aka peter lukas x martin!)
this ship is understandably controversial but also one of my
absolute favorites. it's very, very toxic, and based on a super
toxic power dynamic (with peter being an eldritch entity and
also martin's mentor and also martins boss and also insanely
rich and all....) but i think that is what makes it so compelling!
peter comes into martin's life at a time where martin is at his
most self-destructive and lonely and swoops in to try and
manipulate him. martin is very aware of exactly what peter is
trying to do, but plays along.
mind you, just because he consciously plays along doesn't mean
he's not a victim. still, i think all this makes for an interesting
dynamic between these two very lonely dudes.
also, i think the idea of martin's type being his boss that treats
him badly (as seen with jon) is funny (and also a little sad.
i think martins type is 1) people who need him for something,
so he feels useful, and 2) people who disrespect him, so he feels
as though they are honest.
it's common for people with low self-esteem to look for partners
who use them and treat them badly because that is what they believe
they deserve.
this is definitely also an interesting aspect of jmart, but shows
a lot in pmart too. i think that's why jmart and pmart can coexist
so well. pmart mirrors the toxic parts of jmart, and maybe through
peter, martin can recognize his toxic relationship patterns.
i don't see pmart as having the potential of a healthy long-term
relationship. but i absolutely think they work as a toxic situationship
martin would be sad enough to be in.
timmartin (aka tim stoker x martin!)
i'm not invested in this ship as much as i am invested in jmart &
pmart, but i do think they have potential for a cute dynamic.
they fit into a kind of stereotypical ship with martin being the
introverted, shy one and tim being the extroverted, flirty one
that gets martin to open up and explore more.
and tim has some crazy mental issues going on that martin's
saviour complex would not be able to resist.

i started calling peter lukas 'pukas' with an old online friend and i can't think of him with any other name now.
pukas would, in my opinion, be the perfect husband: rich and always away at sea. i also really love his voice. it's weird and uncanny but also oddly soothing.
i see pukas as a very contradictory character. it's weird how he's supposedly so devoted to the Lonely but still never manages to shut up. peter's love for isolation comes from his hatred for other people, and probably also because he loves being an avatar. i mean, he gets to be the heir to an insanely rich family, and he gets to have sick powers.
to me, pukas is just a spoiled, immature boy at heart. he's irresponsible, selfish and short-sighted. he's manipulative but so distant from the average human experience that his manipulation comes off as just... obvious and odd.
i think pukas' childhood is what shaped him into the 'person' he turned out to be. in my head, this fanfiction is how his childhood went.
lonelyeyes (aka elias bouchard x pukas!)
it's almost impossible not to ship lonelyeyes. two evil idiots in love.
what i love about their weird little dynamic is that they're both pretty much in love with only themselves, and that they both are aware that their parter could (and will) throw them under the bus if it would further his goals. it's the kind of honesty between them that is what makes a long-term relationship possible. basically, they deserve each other. because they're both horrible to be with.
i also find it interesting that the only way peter, as an avatar of the Lonely, can have a lover (or any social contacts tbh) is if the dynamic is transactional.
he can have a relationship with elias because elias uses him for his money and influence. in turn, peter uses elias for social interaction every now and then (i think even Lonely avatars need a bit of socializing. you have to know what it's like to be around people in order to really feel the lack of people).
that also connects with how bets are peter's way of socializing, as it is a way to connect with people while still keeping a distance.
pmart (aka martin x pukas!)
again it becomes clear that pukas can't have any relationships that are actually about the people dating him. both people in the relationship have to represent a concept instead, so that there can still be that distance. while with lonelyeyes, those concepts are money and entertainment, with pmart, peter uses martin as a plaything for his bet with elias, while martin uses peter as a form of self harm.
no genuine romantic connection here. not that peter would ever want that!

backstory:
peter was born into the incredibly wealthy lukas family.
as his family was devoted to the Lonely, peter and his siblings
grew up isolated from the world and each other.
while his siblings couldn't handle the lonely conditions of
their childhood, peter embraced the Lonely early on.
as an adult, peter became the captain of the Tundra
(a cargo ship). he used this ship only to find victims for the
Lonely and would sacrifice crew members by throwing them into
the Lonely.
peter attempted a ritual for the lonely once, where he commissioned
a housing block built with the intention to isolate its tentants,
with the plan to eventually kill them. the ritual was stopped by
gertrude robinson.
peter was asked by elias bouchard to take over the magnus insitute
in season 4.
