Dimiour

The city made of dreams

Dimiour is the space the Dreambinders have created within the Second Layer. It was created by, and is maintained by, the consistent focus of imagination by those destined and educated enough to enter it.

Structure

Dimiour can be sectioned into 3 parts:

WISTERIA BOROUGH

  • area ruled over by the Locke family
  • considered the Weavers' area
  • a residential paradise focusing on peace and aesthetics

Relevant places include:

Locke Castle
Residence of the Locke family. Surrounded by Tethys lake and the Founders' Gardens (publicly accessible gardens for relaxation and fantastical botanics).

Reverists Rings
A sort of suburban housing area with idyllic cottages and gardens. Homes are usually built in circular groups of 2-6 to encourage community.

Weaver's Tower
The oldest building to be contrived in Dimiour and the Starpainter‘s residence/place of work. Time and sky are controlled here.

Marblemaw Market
Marketplace of Dimiour.

MORGENTAU CRESCENT

  • area ruled over by the Morgentau family
  • considered the Collectors' and Guardians' area
  • academic and service district with many museums, stores, restaurants, theatres etc.

Relevant places include:

Morgentau Residence
Residence of the Morgentau family that has mostly been converted to a memorial/museum today.

Bank of Dimiour
Only legal place of production and distribution of emotion droplets

Library of Dimiour
Public librarary and Collectors‘ research center. Residence of the Keybearer in the Dreambinders' Archive.

Agora
Town square with statues of important members.

Keybearer's Close
Street leading to Agora. Lined with the most stores in the Crescent.

Host of Athena
Guardians‘ center to train and strategize. Also includes the Courthouse.

Lyre Street
Street leading up to the Cadell Residence.

Cadell Residence
Home of the Cadell family.

Weeping Woods
Woods originally used to prevent people from getting too close to the Guardians‘ center, which eventually became a popular place to relax. A forest made of mostly weeping willows.

Transportation Weavery
Maintenance and planning station of the Dimiour transport and postage system. Most boat routes through the Tethys Roads begin and end here.

WELKIN HEIGHTS

  • latest created area, ruled over by the Fink family
  • island floating over the city, casting a shadow on the nothern part of the city (refer to map).

Relevant places include:

Welkin Heights
An amusement park for Dimiour‘s residents.

Fink Residence
A walled-off mansion where Fink family members reside.

Waterfalls
Source of the Tethys river and access point to the island.

Other

Lyre, Athena's, Marblemaw and Keybearer Bridge
Bridges crossing Tethys Roads, allowing for easy travel between Morgentau Crescent and Wisteria Borough.

Tethys Roads
Strategically connected rivers to allow for boat travelling services to transport people to relevant areas.

Currency

Once Dreambinders began trading at Marblemaw Market, we needed a currency in order to create a working society.
For this, we use Droplets containing emotion. These are colourful, water-like droplets that can be kept on a string (often worn as bracelets or necklaces). When dropped onto skin, they can trigger the emotions felt while creating the droplet. In order for the droplets to be of high quality, the emotion must be felt intensely during the moment of creation.
While, technically, everyone could create these droplets, it‘s only legal for a few select Weavers to produce them in the Bank of Dimiour.
Weavers in the droplet production work either as Emotional Source (a job reserved for especially sensitive people) or as an Extractor (who puts the Source‘s emotions into the droplets). Emotional Sources have a high standing in Dimiour.
Certain emotions have higher value, but this changes depending on trends and demand. For example, during difficult times, content and wholesome emotions might have more value, and during generally happy times, complex and dramatic feelings might be more sought after.

These droplets can also be used for intoxication when especially strong or disorienting emotions are contained in them (oftentimes these are made by combining many conflicting emotions). This kind of production is highly illegal.
It is also illegal to contain and distribute the emotions terror, pain, despair, hatred, infatuation and lust.

Time

The Starpainter, in their tower, controls the day-and-night cycle as well as weather. It is their job to keep time in check. Dimiour follows the 24-hour-schedule of the real world. Clocks don‘t work in Dimiour, but there is a bell that the Starpainter lets ring through the city every half hour which makes it possible to tell the time.
(For example: bell chimes 7 times at 7 AM. It chimes once at 7:30 AM. It chimes 8 times at 8 AM; and so on.)

Fashion

Fashion trends vary across sections of Dimiour. For example, most areas of Morgentau Crescent prefer maximalist, surreal clothing — as unconventional, colourful and confusing as possible. However, in the Archive, dark and monotone clothing is encouraged to prevent distraction from work. So, the Crescent has both extremes of fashion. Often you can tell whether a Collector is at work or not depending on how eccentric their clothing is.
Welkin Heights tends to bring forth a colourful, but more practical style.
The Dimiour maximalism comes to its peak in Erato St., where it‘s the norm to dress in the brightest, most complex outfits possible.
In the residential areas of Wisteria Borough, especially surrounding Locke Castle, an traditional, almost medieval style is common.
Guardians, when at work, wear a black uniform with only the slightest emerald green accents. This colorless clothing sets them apart from other citizens and gives them an air of authority.

In Dimiour, clothing is not limited by gender roles.

Work

Work in Dimiour is divided between the three groups (Weavers, Collectors, Guardians).

Weavers

Conceptualist of new areas, Keeper of natural laws, Keeper of sight, Keeper of sound, Keeper of scent, Keeper of touch, Keeper of the collective, Starpainter, Starpainter‘s servant, Weaver Ambassador to AM, Emotional Source, Extractor, Soul Warden (...)

Leadership

The Starpainter, as the Weavers’ leader, symbolically stands above the rest but in practice forms an equal part of the Three of Blood. This trio, consisting of (usually the eldest) members of the founding families, decide over and pass laws.
They’re the ultimate decision makers and also elect the councils for each of their subgroups and the Keybearer and Soul warden.
The Collectors’, Weavers’ and Guardians’ Council together form the Dreambinders’ Council. They design laws, discuss current issues and make final decisions on minor questions.
They also choose the head archivist, head Weaver and head general. These are leaders of each subgroup who actively work with the people they decide over and organize tasks and strategy.
They also choose who gets to have a higher leadership position which allows them to pass down part of their responsibilities.
People (especially Guardians) with higher leadership positions tend to enforce laws upon citizens.
